Call for proposals for Post-Doctoral Research in the Social Sciences and/or the Humanities on the subject of The Leadership of David Ben-Gurion—Practical and Theoretical Aspects

David Ben-Gurion, Israel’s nation-builder and first prime minister, led the Zionist movement and its main project—the establishing of a Jewish homeland—for three decades. What personal characteristics made him such a remarkable figure? What were his merits and defects as a leader? How did he manage to sustain his authority for such a long time? What did he leave as his legacy to posterity?

Although all these questions have been dealt with in the past from a historical point of view, never has a full research project been dedicated specifically to Ben-Gurion’s leadership. Additionally, while the theoretical field of leadership is well developed in the social sciences, it may gain an important historical case study by dealing with a prominent leader such as David Ben-Gurion. Conversely, the use of up-to-date analytic tools of leadership studies may improve our understanding of Ben-Gurion's historical praxis.

The Center for Israel Studies at the Ben-Gurion Research Institute for the Study of Israel and Zionism, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (Sede Boqer Campus), and the Ben-Gurion Heritage Institute invite post-doctoral candidate s to submit proposals for thorough research that will describe and analyze David Ben-Gurion’s leadership against the background of the latest theories on the subject.

The researcher will receive funding in the sum of 61,680 NIS per year for two years. (The second year will be considered after submission of a progress report.) Candidates must have complete fluency in Hebrew and submit the following documents:

  • Statement of research intent – including fields of interest and possible research questions.
  • Curriculum Vitae and list of publications.
  • Two recommendation letters – one of which must be from your PhD's advisor.
