is Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies, Philosophy and Comparative Literature at San Diego State University. He has also been Professor of Religion at Temple University, Professor of Philosophy at Sarah Lawrence College, New School for Social Research and Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart and Visiting Professor at Union Theological Seminary, Hebrew Union College, Jewish Institute of Religion, Vassar College and University of Hawaii. He is the author of more than twenty books including Martin Buber: The Life of Dialogue; Problematic Rebel: Melville, Dostoyevsky, Kafka, Camus; and Martin Buber’s Life and Work (three volumes).
