New York-based Human Rights Watch accused the Bahraini authorities of systematically targeting demonstrators and bystanders wounded in anti-government protests and subjecting them to harassment, mistreatment and even denial critical care. It charged that it took over the largest public medical facility on 16 March 2011 the Bahraini Defense Force (BDF) and other security forces "have sought out and threatened, beaten and detained patients injured by teargas, rubber bullets, birdshot pellets, and live ammunition."
